RESIDENCY 2018/2019

ABOUT

Three artists are invited for a period of two months each to develop a final piece to be showcased in Malmö between October 2018 and April 2019.  This space is open to experimental processes that embrace the importance of taste, touch, smell, sound and sight. The final piece may be, but is not limited to, an exhibition, performance, workshop, immersive experience, or installation.

SELECTED ARTISTS

ARTIST #1

Sophia Ioannou Gjerding is an artist currently living in Aarhus, Denmark. Her artistic practice involves installation, film, animation, sculpture, sound and text. Through these mediums, she strives to understand contemporary cultural image production and how recent imaging technology creates new visual perspectives and spatial dimensions. At COMA, she will be working with sound, video and 3D-print. She will be using photogrammetry--a method that makes it possible to obtain three-dimensional information from photographs. Working with this method, she will use representations of lions, mainly pictures of sculptures found on the internet (for instance a lion statue previously found in Palmyra called Lion of Al-lāt), and try to recreate three dimensional sculptures from these representations.

ARTIST #2

Emelie Carlén (Copenhagen) mainly works with an investigation of how modes of representation come to affect experience and identity. Her installations, largely consisting of sculptures and mixed media, has had its central core in examining desires and its relation to objects and experiences, cultural structures and behaviors. For her residency at COMA she will further explore the tactile matter in material and the experience of a sculpture through different senses.

ARTISTS #3

Born in Istanbul and based in Tallinn, Denizay Apusoglu is an artist and designer who is fascinated by speculatively experimenting with materials, ideas and science to create seemingly magical effects. Reconfigurations of technology and the manipulation of the usual objects are the methods of her creative process to unlock new art forms. At COMA, she plans to explore some of the triggering factors for the emotional responses that differ us from objects. She has particular interest in the uncanny valley chart and aims to discuss and discover what makes a human feel sympathy, empathy or eeriness in the presence of the other object.

LOCATION

STPLN is located in the southern Swedish city of Malmö. An international environment with a vibrant up-and-coming culture scene, STPLN is a creative hub offering different resources and facilities. Residents gain access to a Makerspace (lazer-cutting, 3d printing, wood workshop, electronics workshop, screen printing and textiles); a recycle and redesign material center; an analog media lab (film photography and analog music production); a bicycle kitchen; a co-working space and a fully equipped 200m2 event hall.

Since opening in 2011, STPLN has served the community of Malmö as a space to develop projects especially in the Creative and Cultural Industries. These projects range from one-off events to long-term in-house ventures (and everything in between). It is a space where people turn their hobbies into a profession.  Aside from the physical resources available, the team at STPLN are on hand to offer assistance in project development, seeking funding, marketing and branding ideas and providing connections to a wide network of creatives.
